We are Parrot Heads because…

We are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans.

We are Parrot Heads because
We love the ocean.
We love the planet.
We love to have fun.

We are Parrot Heads because
We are not afraid to be silly.
We are not afraid to act foolish.
We are not afraid of love.

We are Parrot Heads because
We like scantily clad members of our favorite sex.
We like playing in the sun with those same members.
We like singing songs that say all of these things.

We are Parrot Heads because
We believe the best things in life cannot be bought.
We believe sharing the best things makes them better.
We believe in the innate goodness in all of us.

We are Parrot Heads because
We know shared joy is increased.
We know shared pain is lessened.
We know a good friend has value beyond measure.

It just so happens that Jimmy Buffett sings about all these things.
So, we are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans.

We are Jimmy Buffett fans because we are Parrot Heads!

Austin’s worst traffic spots

The Austin-American Statesman has an article about the congestion on Austin’s highways. It is based on a report from Inrix who provides traffic info to MapQuest and others.

The study ranked exit 235 to Martin Luther King Boulevard and 19th St. the worst in Texas and 62nd worst in the country. The 0.35-mile stretch is congested 34 hours per week, slowing commuters to an average speed of 9.8 miles per hour when congested.

Exit 233, to Riverside Drive, was the state’s second-worst and 75th worst in the nation, with vehicles traveling an average of 17.1 miles per hour during 57 congested hours per week.

Overall congestion in Austin/Round Rock is ranked as the 26th worst in the nation. Dallas, Houston, San Antonio all ranked worse than Austin.

MADD: Going to far?

From a post in DUI Blog

MADD’s Latest Weapon: Update

My post last week concerning a California High School’s efforts with MADD to traumatize their students, drew quite a reaction from readers.  The following is an update:

School Defends Drunken Driving Hoax

Oceanside, CA.  AP, June 12 – School officials in Oceanside, California, are defending a scared-straight exercise that sent some El Camino High School students into hysterics.

One Monday last month, California Highway Patrol officers went to 20 classrooms and delivered the grim news that several students had been killed in drunken-driving car crashes over the weekend.

The news devastated Michelle de Gracia, who says she was nauseated and too stunned to cry. Others in her physics class were so upset that the teacher had to tell them it was all staged. Then they became angry. Michelle says says “they got the shock they wanted.”

A 15-year-old student says, while she feels “betrayed” by her teachers and school administrators, she also feels that “if it saves one life, it’s worth it.” Others disagree. During assemblies after the hoax, some students held up posters reading “Death is real. Don’t play with our emotions.”

Camino High guidance counselor Lori Tauber says “we wanted them to be traumatized.”

“We wanted them to be traumatized.”  One wonders where the MADDness is going next….

Moving and other related stuff

So, I will be moving into a house by myself.  I have been living with roommates for the past two years almost and it is time to have a place of my own.  My friend, who owns the house is going to be leaving his drum set there.  So, I guess have to learn how to play drums now!

I will also be getting a new puppy.  A friend of mine has family that cannot keep the dog.  With me having a house and yard I was ready for dog anyway.  Meet Bullet!

A.A.A.D.D. – KNOW THE SYMPTOMS

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. – Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.
This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden.  As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.  As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that
I brought up from the mail box earlier.

I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.  I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full.  So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first.

But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.  I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left.  My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I’d been drinking.

I’m going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don’t accidentally knock it over.  The Coke is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.  As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye–they need water.

I put the Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I’ve been searching for all morning.  I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I’m going to water the flowers.  I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote someone left on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I’ll be looking for the remote, but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor.  So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.  Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: the car isn’t washed, the bills aren’t paid, there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter, the flowers don’t have enough water, there is still only 1 check in my check book, I can’t find the remote, I can’t find my glasses, and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I’m really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I’m really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I’ll try to get some help for it, but first I’ll check my e-mail….

Do me a favor.

Forward this message to everyone you know, because I don’t remember who I’ve sent it to.

Don’t laugh — if this isn’t you yet, your day is coming!

JJW at the Houston airport

My friend was flying back from Florida and had a little layover in Houston. While there she got this pic of Jerry Jeff Walker sitting at the airport waiting on his flight. JJW is on the left. The guy on the far was his personal chef while down in Belize. I will be heading down to Belize in Aug. Maybe I can get luck and run into him as well.
