I have always wanted to be involved in the music business in some way. I have been “trying” to play guitar for a LONG time now.  As much fun as this is I am never going to do anything other then just have fun with it. So, I have decided to try and combine my 20+ years of computer expertise with music by building a home recording studio! This project will take me most of the summer to put together.   I have put together a list of gear that I want to get for the first pass at this.

TASCAM FW-1082 10-Channel FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface   599.00

Musicians Gear TASCAM Monitor and Mic Package A  249.99

MXL MXL-90 Microphone Shockmount   38.99

Musicians Gear Mesh Microphone Grille   6.99

ProLine Universal Microphone Clip   4.99

I will be combining all this with Cakewalk Sonar 8.  Once I have all the gear purchased and setup I will post pic’s as well as more updates as I learn the home recording process.

I will be working sound this Thursday at The Amsterdam, 121 W. 8th St. and Colorado.

My friend was flying back from Florida and had a little layover in Houston. While there she got this pic of Jerry Jeff Walker sitting at the airport waiting on his flight. JJW is on the left. The guy on the far was his personal chef while down in Belize. I will be heading down to Belize in Aug. Maybe I can get luck and run into him as well.

If you like the video you can pick up the album, Ragtops And Flip Flops, from CD Baby.  You can also find out more about Brent Burns from his website

I have been know to say that rap/hip-hop isn’t music. That is a taste thing and not a technical analysis on my part. However, Pandora’s blog has a great post on just this very question.

This idea that rap somehow “isn’t music,” is pretty prevalent, so let’s check it out. Setting aside the minefields of class and culture and race and just keeping it to the music.

Pop songs, folk songs, art songs, and even instrumental music are almost always built around a melody. In most rap, that focal role of the melody is replaced by the voice of the rapper, and by the words. Now it turns out that the vocal cadences of rapping do in fact have a whole music of their own (as do our own speaking voices), and it’s a music that is quite subtle and absolutely bursting with the kinds of deep human information that animate the strongest art.

Just ran across this article on Digital Trends about Last.fm starting up a free music streaming service.

The company has signed agreements with all four major labels and some 150,000 indies to give access to a massive catalogue. Users will be able to listen to any track three times. After that, they’ll be encouraged to buy the track from one of a number of sources.

The beauty of all this is that Last.fm has promised to pay the artists a royalty every time a track is played – even unsigned artists who have their music available. If a track is purchased, Last.fm will share the fee.
