<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you haven&#8217;t been to a Buffett show and parking lot party check out this <a target="_blank" href="http://video.ap.org/v/default.aspx?f=ILCHS&#038;g=3e355759-405d-4b01-82c1-6c2d63fac991&amp;mk=en-ap&amp;fg=svip_article_copy">video</a>. Also check out the article for more details.</p>
<blockquote><p>The concert was sold out, drawing nearly 40,000 fans. I still get goosebumps when I look at the crowded lawn during a love song like Buffett&#8217;s &#8220;Come Monday.&#8221; I think of passionate White Sox owner Bill Veeck who said there was nothing as beautiful as a full baseball stadium. That&#8217;s how I feel at a Buffett show.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m guessing 5,000-7,000 fans were camped out in the parking lot before the show. Gates opened at 1 p.m. Showtime was 8 p.m. The rural setting of Alpine and nearby Lake Geneva draws fans from all over America, which is why Buffett makes this an annual stop. On stage Saturday Buffett mentioned people who trekked in from Colorado, North Dakota, Tucson, Az. and Hawaii.</p></blockquote>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Being as large of Buffett fan as I am when I ran across an <a target="_blank" href="http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=772218">article </a>in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the band members of The Coral Reefer band I just had to share.</p>
<blockquote><h3>Michael Utley</h3>
<p><i> Keyboards/musical director</i></p>
<p>Michael Utley left behind pre-medical course work in the late 1960s to become a studio musician. He has performed with Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Cliff and more. He has appeared on Buffett&#8217;s albums since 1973. Together with Robert Greenidge, Utley created the band Club Trini, which continues to perform Caribbean party music and is composed of most of the Coral Reefer Band.</p>
<h3>Robert Greenidge</h3>
<p><i> Steel drums</i></p>
<p>Born in Trinidad, Greenidge is one of the world&#8217;s pre-eminent steel drum artists. Greenidge started playing with Buffett in 1983 during the recording of &#8220;One Particular Harbour.&#8221; </p>
<p>While in the Coral Reefer Band, he and Michael Utley recorded three albums together in the 1980s as Club Trini. Their 2000 live album, &#8220;Margaritaville Café: Late Night Live&#8221; featured Buffett doing guest vocals on an album performed by most of his Coral Reefer band. Greenidge is an arranger and composer for the 30-piece Desperadoes steel drum orchestra in his home country.</p>
<h3>Jim Mayer</h3>
<p><i>Bass</i></p>
<p>Jim Mayer, who was born to missionaries in India, said he had known since he was 5 years old that he would make music for a living. Since joining the Coral Reefer Band in 1989, Mayer has recorded two award-winning children&#8217;s albums under the &#8220;Uncle Jim&#8221; moniker. </p>
<p>&#8220;The first time I played &#8216;Margaritaville&#8217; with Jimmy, I still had a punk haircut,&#8221; Mayer said. &#8220;I really now appreciate the opportunities I&#8217;ve had with this band.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Mac McAnally</h3>
<p><i> Guitars</i></p>
<p>To call Mac McAnally a jack-of-all-trades is an understatement. He was the first musician signed to Geffen records, before John Lennon and Elton John. Outside of his 10 solo albums, McAnally has been responsible for a number of country radio hits. Since Buffett first recorded one of his songs in 1981, country artists have had hits with McAnally&#8217;s songs, including Sawyer Brown&#8217;s &#8220;All These Years,&#8221; Alabama&#8217;s &#8220;Old Flame&#8221; and Kenny Chesney&#8217;s &#8220;Back Where I Come From.&#8221; Garth Brooks, Ricky Skaggs and George Strait have also recorded his songs. He&#8217;s also a seasoned session musician and record producer who has worked with Little Feat, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison and many others.</p>
<h3>John Lovell</h3>
<p><i> Trumpet</i></p>
<p>He was working at Circuit City when a friend told him to send a tape to Jimmy Buffett&#8217;s people, who were looking for a trumpeter for the 1992 summer tour. &#8220;I listened to all kinds of music, but I wasn&#8217;t too aware of how popular Jimmy Buffett was,&#8221; Lovell said. Circuit City &#8220;was the first time I had ever had a real job, so this seemed like something I should do.&#8221; He&#8217;s been a Coral Reefer ever since. When not playing with Buffett, Lovell plays weekly with a swing/jazz combo, Oop Bop Sha Bam, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.</p>
<h3>Ralph MacDonald</h3>
<p><i> Percussion</i></p>
<p>Ralph MacDonald is not only a Grammy award-winning, bestselling songwriter (&#8220;Just the Two of Us,&#8221; &#8220;Where is the Love&#8221;), but also a sought-after studio musician who has appeared on records with James Taylor, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack and more. He played with Harry Belafonte for nearly a decade. Since he&#8217;d worked with Robert Greenidge, Buffett asked MacDonald to write some songs with him in the mid-1980s.</p>
<p>&#8220;Jimmy convinced me to try playing in his band for two weeks in 1986,&#8221; MacDonald said. &#8220;I guess it worked out, because I&#8217;ve been there ever since then.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Doyle Grisham</h3>
<p><i> Steel guitar</i></p>
<p>Doyle Grisham first worked with Buffett in the studio in 1971. After working on three more albums in as many years, Buffett started moving away from steel guitar in his music. Grisham went on to be a sought-after session musician and a talented producer and studio engineer who performed on albums with Reba McEntire, George Jones, Randy Travis and others. He also owns a recording studio and publishing company in Mississippi. In 1999, Buffett asked Grisham again to work on an entire album with him and asked him to join the Coral Reefer Band. </p>
<p>&#8220;I have learned by watching Jimmy Buffett that it takes more than just going out and singing to achieve the admiration his fans have for him,&#8221; Grisham said. &#8220;He knows how to entertain them and gives them what they came for.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Peter Mayer</h3>
<p><i> Guitar</i></p>
<p>Along with his brother Jim, Peter Mayer joined Buffett&#8217;s band after signing a record deal with Warner Bros. for their own band, PM. Mayer has gone on to become an award-winning Christian recording artist whose annual &#8220;Stars and Promises&#8221; Christmas tours visit churches and theaters throughout the country. </p>
<p>&#8220;The people in the Coral Reefer Band are awesome people,&#8221; Mayer said. &#8220;For me, their strengths and their stylistic strong points taught me things about playing that I didn&#8217;t have myself.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Roger Guth</h3>
<p><i> Drums</i></p>
<p>Roger Guth is a drummer from St. Louis who grew up with a love of jazz and developed a knack for songwriting. When he and the Mayer brothers were asked to work with Buffett on &#8220;Off to See the Lizard&#8221; in 1988, Guth ended up co-writing three tracks on the album with Buffett. He has since continued to perform with the Coral Reefer Band, as well as write and record his own work and music for Buffett and Peter Mayer.</p>
<h3>Nadirah Shakoor</h3>
<p><i> Vocals</i></p>
<p>Nadirah Shakoor was a member of Arrested Development from 1992 to 1995 and was nominated for a Grammy. She has released a solo album in Japan and two independent albums in the United States.</p>
<p> Known by Parrotheads for her soulful, soaring vocals onstage with the Coral Reefer Band, Shakoor also led the vocal stylings for Club Trini&#8217;s live album. She is preparing to release &#8220;Nod to the Storyteller,&#8221; an album composed mostly of her interpretations of Buffett songs. The album will feature many of the Coral Reefer Band members.</p>
<h3>Tina Gullickson</h3>
<p><i> Vocals</i></p>
<p>Tina Gullickson jumped into the entertainment world as a model and local TV host as a teen. She has appeared on &#8220;Star Search&#8221; and worked with Tori Amos, Bill Medley and others.</p>
<p> Since joining the Coral Reefer Band in 1995, Gullickson has partnered with other band members on various projects, including a spot as executive producer and stylist for Peter Mayer&#8217;s &#8220;Shall We Dance&#8221; music video.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans.</p>
<p>We are Parrot Heads because<br />We love the ocean.<br />We love the planet.<br />We love to have fun.</p>
<p>We are Parrot Heads because<br />We are not afraid to be silly.<br />We are not afraid to act foolish.<br />We are not afraid of love.</p>
<p>We are Parrot Heads because<br />We like scantily clad members of our favorite sex.<br />We like playing in the sun with those same members.<br />We like singing songs that say all of these things.</p>
<p>We are Parrot Heads because<br />We believe the best things in life cannot be bought.<br />We believe sharing the best things makes them better.<br />We believe in the innate goodness in all of us.</p>
<p>We are Parrot Heads because<br />We know shared joy is increased.<br />We know shared pain is lessened.<br />We know a good friend has value beyond measure.</p>
<p>It just so happens that Jimmy Buffett sings about all these things.<br />So, we are not Parrot Heads because we are Jimmy Buffett fans.</p>
<p>We are Jimmy Buffett fans because we are Parrot Heads!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well, I did come back. I could have stayed I would have just been homeless and thats not so good. I had a great time as you can see&#8230;. The story behind the picture:</p>
<p>The day I get to Belize I decided I wanted to take a dip in the sea. I run down the the beach at B C&#8217;s Bar and dive in. Well, unknown to me, there are rocks, big rocks, just under the water there. I manage to catch one right on my left side just about the middle of my chest.</p>
<p><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1126/741838040_14f4a65641.jpg?v=0" alt="" onload="show_notes_initially();" class="reflect" height="350" width="225" />
<p style="text-align: right; font-size: 8px">Blogged with <a href="http://www.flock.com/blogged-with-flock" title="Flock" target="_new">Flock</a></p>
<p><!-- technorati tags begin -->
<p style="font-size:10px;text-align:right;">Tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/Kaptkaos" rel="tag">Kaptkaos</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/belize" rel="tag">belize</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/%20san%20pedro" rel="tag"> san pedro</a></p>
<p><!-- technorati tags end --></p>
<p> OUCH! Scrapped all the way down to the middle of my thigh. It hurt but I had been drinking most of the day at that point and didn&#8217;t feel to much pain. The next day however, was another story. Ribs were killing me. Every time I laughed it hurt like hell.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well, I survived our first ever multi-day event. It was the 4th annual Pirate&#8217;s Ball. We do this ball to raise money for <a href="http://www.austin-safeplace.org/site/PageServer">Austin SafePlace</a>. For the SafePlace Walk, we raised over $1,815 online; the raffles for the weekend netted us $1,352 and the silent auction items raised $1,865 So, for all our efforts for last weekend, the 2007 Pirate’s Ball raised a whopping $5,032 for SafePlace!!! That is a record setting amount for us!</p>
<p><img src="<a alt="Pirate Ball 2007" href="http://picasaweb.google.com/kaptkaos/PirateSBall2007/photo#5054085434311357938"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/image/kaptkaos/RiO37MCatfI/AAAAAAAAAHE/yl5_CbEcTgE/s288/DSC_0045.JPG" /></a>Many of our club members as well members from other clubs joined in the walk. We even had Snake from Galveston Bay PHC with his Land Jet Ski leading the walk. Looking for pic&#8217;s of this to include.</p>
<p>The ball included a happy hour at Sam&#8217;s Boat where we had <a href="http://www.livingsoul.com/">Don Middlebrook</a> play for us. We did a raffle for Safe Place and raised three hundred dollars! Again, had lots of members show up. We ended up taking over the whole deck out back. Did some great dancing and our usual conga line.</p>
<p>Don was staying at the house with us on Thursday. We ended up staying up playing guitars until 5:30am. Then I was back at it at 9:30. Had to spend the day getting everything down to the hotel for the ball.</p>
<p>Friday had Don playing during registration for the ball. We had most of the locals come in and sign up. Then stayed until Don was done playing. At which point a few of us head up stairs to the hospitality suite. The party there lasted until 4:30 am.</p>
<p>Saturday afternoon we got back from the walk we had Troy Allen playing. Which was supposed to have been poolside but the pool was not ready. Did that stop us? No way! A group of about 30 or so headed out for a photo op in the empty pool. I am still trying to get a copy of the pic&#8217;s taken from the 5th floor. When I get them I will include them here as well. </p>
<p>Saturday night was the big ball. We had the big conference room decorated to the nines! <a href="http://www.hannasreef.com/">Hanna&#8217;s Reef</a> played for the big bash and were fantastic! Almost everyone came dressed as a pirate or a winch. We had a custom contest and awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. To do this fair we had a rep. from the PHIP board do the judging. This year our club got a clean sweep winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd.</p>
<p>There is way to much to cover everything that went on but I have the pictures located <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/kaptkaos">here</a>. Check them out and see just how much fun we had!!!!</p>
